Binding Art

I wonder if you've ever heard of the Japanese Rope Art Shibari. It's a stunning form of binding used back in the 1400's by the Samurai, and was considered an honorable form of restraint for the Samurai's captives known as Hojo-jutsu.

Things have moved on since and this art has taken 2 turns, Shibari, which is an acceptable art form and Kinbaku which has taken a more kink route.

I'm not hugely into fet (although I respect those who are and admire from afar). My love for Shibari was more from a transcendal performance as seen in the oil I painted above of Laura Viktualia, alongside the creativity of the considered tied rope across the body, shaping the human form into a soft and surrendered arial meditation.

I've also had the help of epic Rigger (the person who ties the ropes so beautifully) and now friend Quinn Kane who I met through Anatomy Studios in Peckham.

This is where I was first introduced to Shibari Life Drawing hosted by the very talented figurative illustrator Layla Mohamed.

Since then, Quinn and myself have both been on a very slow journey of joint creation. Quinns knowledge, care, support and trust has been profound throughout and will no doubt continue as we evolve with this beautiful art together alongside the community that's rapidly growing.

I'll be posting more work and exhibiting these pieces at Heatherleys School of Fine Art in January 2025 and will update you as and when I know the dates. You must come.

Meanwhile, keep an eye on my instagram @lizzieowenartist for more information

Thank you
