Since September 2024, I have been studying Sarah Jane Moon's Contemporary Figurative Painting Course at Heatherley's School of Fine Art. This was to bridge my year before I returned to my 2nd Year Portrait Diploma after deferring for a year and to get me back into some sort of regular artistic practice.

I highly recommend this course for those who need that extra push for their art - Sarah-Jane has a habit of taking you out of your comfort zone and suggesting commercial outlooks such as holding an exhibition or creating commissions by approaching those who may be looking for a personal piece of art. She's a force not to be reckoned with and had us all on the course thinking freely. It was fantastic. So, the day has almost arrived and we're about to hold the exhibition.

To give you a quick overview, my two pieces feature an oil painting and giant charcoal (over 7ft high) of Laura Viktualia in Shibari poses. My life drawings and paintings of the human body are about the mind, body, and spirit.  I am a Reiki Master, and my work is a way to explore a deeper perspective of the human form. I studied this beautiful rope performance art because I wanted to create works that were more than a life drawing or a yogic position, it’s a way for me to produce work showing how far our incredible bodies reach an edge and then transcend through the power of the mind and the nature of the spirit.

As I mentioned in my last post ,Shibari is a respectful practice that allows models (male, female, non-binary) to experience a state of transcendence, transition, surrender, trust, and meditation.

Laura Viktualia who allowed me to use her photography as reference for this show says “To me it’s just so beautiful how one art transcends and translates into another from a rope session to a photograph. I often feel so honoured when I’m allowed to then relive the experience through new forms of artwork’. For me I enjoy painting the human form not only in stunning positions created by the rope, but also in a trance like state, bound, held, and empowered at the same time.

Other works at the exhibition are by Lizzie Freemantle, Louise Lumley, Jane Maxwell, Nazanin Moradi, Marion Roberts, Joanna Sellick, Soledad Vaeza, Sandy Wall and myself

Thank you, Sarah-Jane for your inspiring and challenging teaching
